Healthy Hair
I'm just wondering what you all do to make your hair healthy or at least healthy looking. I have hair that goes a little past my shoulders and I really want to grow it out but it always looks really brittle and unhealthy when I grow it out so I usually get it cut. I heard that you're only supposed to wash your hair every two days or something but when I do that it feels really greasy and I get dandruff so I start washing my hair again. What do you guys do? Any hair products that could help? If any hairdressers are out there I would love some advice.

Im a cosmetologist and one thing that helps your hair keeps its moisture is to remember shampoo is for your scalp and conditioner is for your ends. washing your hair every other day helps too!
I wash my hair every day (I hate the feeling of greasy roots!!!) but my hair is still really healthy, and it's well past my shoulders. I use moisturing shampoo and conditioner usually (Pantene is my favorite). Twice a week (in the winter; once in the summer) I deep condition using my hair. My favorite product for that is Revlon's Butter Up (or something like that... it's in an orange squeeze tube). It says to leave it on for about 15 minutes but I usually do an hour because I forget. :D I also use VO5's hair protecting spray before I blow dry my hair. About once or twice a week I'll skip washing my hair, instead only conditioning it, and wear it up. I really try to keep my hair healthy! It's a little less easy to control if it's healthy (it doesn't take to straightening on the ends) but I'd rather have really healthy hair that has more of a mind of its own than really brittle, fried hair that always does what you want it to do.
Also, my hair is super thick and it's straight. That's my hair type, if that helps.
Ah, the quest for perfect hair. It never ends. I usually end up cutting mine short too!
But for the most part, I wash my hair every other day - if I'm feeling a little greasy in between, I actually just put some baby powder in there to suck up the extra moisture. You sort of have to rub it in. That works really well. (Just don't put too much or you will look like a walking Q-tip!)
If possible, I will avoid blow-drying and straightening in the same day. And once in awhile, if I want it to look really nice and shiny, I'll just spritz in a spray shine. Again, not too much or it looks like you dipped your head in vegetable oil.
Good luck!
Taking prenatal vitamins might help too. I know that when I was taking them, before I got pregnant, my hair and nails seemed to be a bit healthier.
I usually wash my hair every other day. I am lucky and can actually go several days before my hair looks or feels greasy. I used to be an avid daily hair washer but having a kid sorta caused that to no longer be a reality and I can say that it really has made a difference with having more healthy hair. But on the days that I don't wash my hair I have a cooler shower so that my hair doesn't get all funky in the steam, otherwise I might as well just wash it (I hope that makes sense). When I do wash my hair I leave the shampoo in for maybe 30 seconds and the conditioner in for 90 seconds (appx). I also switch brands every other time which I heard helps. I switch between Aussie (my favorite) and fructise. Good luck!
I would recommend drinking lots of water, taking vitamins (I've also heard prenatal vitamins are very good for hair, nails, etc.), trying not to use heat-styling methods, and always conditioning. I've heard that hair growth/length are largely genetic, but at the very least, if you are healthy, your hair (regardless of length) will be healthy too.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE Redkin's hair shampoos and conditioners. They are a little pricy but they last lot longer than other kinds and are totally worth it. (Panteen has wax in it, not good for your hair FYI)
I would go to a salon or beauty suply store, tell them about your hair and wants, and they'll tell you which products will work best for your, for free.
