Bottle Blonde

I've been getting my hair colored professionally for about 6 years, I think. I'm a blonde at heart and can't bear to go back to my brownish color. I'm serious about this, I go to a "blonde specialist". However, as you all know, going to the salon can get a bit pricey. I have to get my roots touched up every 6 weeks and it usually costs a little over $100 when its all said and done. Needless to say in this economy, it is something I may have to give up!

BUT - I will not go down easily. I want to know from any hairstylists out there if there are any over the counter blonde hair coloring kit that will get even close to my perfect-beautiful-salon-blonde. I've never had a good experience with the color bought from drug stores, it just doesn't look right. But maybe there's one I haven't tried that's actually decent.

Please help a sister out. Thanks in advance!

Have you tried a different salon to see if there's a less expensive stylist? I used to pay $120 at a salon and then found another place just as good for $75. Maybe you could get your haircut at one of those Supercuts places and go to the salon just for coloring? Or, check to see if someone does hair at their home . . . they're usually a little cheaper because they don't pay booth rent.

I'll pray for you. ;)

go to sally's and ask a worker to match your hair color to one there, ask her how to mix it. then go home and mix it and have one of your friend put it on. make sure she puts in on evenly and leaves it on long enough. good luck!

you spend $100 to TOUCH UP your roots? Wow. I say ditch your "specialist" and go somewhere else!

The people at Supercuts go to the same amount of schooling as someone from the expensive places. I'm not sure if the "Blonde Specialist" went to more schooling, but I think you should ask around for someone that can do it for cheaper. You could also go the Sally's route. They usually have stylists working there that you can ask about it. At least the one I go to does. Good luck. :)

You can try a beauty school, and go to a student who has been in school for a long time and really knows what she's/he's doing. Call and ask for one of their top students, ask them who they'd highly recomment -- maybe talk to the instructor and they can refer you to someone good.

My sister gets her very (bottle) blonde hair done at a beauty school and she only pays $40 and it always looks amazing!

SUPERCUTS!!!! Come on ladies. Anyone who is serious about their hair doesn't go to Supercuts, I'm sorry. Thanks but no thanks.

I'm telling you, the reason I spend so much on my hair is because the blonde is PERFECT.

I feel like you get what you pay for. The cheaper salons are cheap for a reason. I tried a new gal right before I got married and the color was a mess. That's when I found the "Specialist" to fix everything. And she has never let me down. If its a matter of saving $25, its not worth it to me.

But I like the Sally's idea, for sure. And I'm dying to hear any other suggestions too.

Just not supercuts! ;)

I have to agree with the OP. I got my hair done at the hair schools for years, even though it looked like ass every time. Finally I found a lady who did it from her house, and she does an amazing job for only $50 (cut and color). My blonde is always perfect. I'd say ask around about a home-lady, although they usually tend to be booked solid and don't take new clients. I do have to say that getting bottle color and doing it yourself will be a DISASTER. If you're not willing to go to a professional at Supercuts, then you shouldn't be willing to do it yourself either. Good luck.

OP- Who is your blonde specialist and where is she located? I'm in DIRE NEED of someone good!!

(Also, if you do it yourself with stuff from Sally's, be careful. I've tried it twice in my lifetime and regretted it both times.)

To the OP,

I am a cosmetologist and I think it is quite silly that you trust doing your own hair rather then going to Supercuts. There is something wrong with that. AND I don't even work at a Supercuts but I think this is quite ridiculous.

I think you are probably just going to have to accept the fact that you have to spend the money if you want it done right.
I have to agree with you...Supercuts would be a big mistake. But I also think doing it yourself would be too!

Where are you located?? I want a "blonde specialist" too!

Wow OP, you sound really high maintenance. The expensive lady went to the same amount of school as the "Supercuts" lady. Don't freak out when people are trying to give you ideas. You asked for help.

If you decide to do it yourself, you need to get a bleach that doesn't require heat and won't burn your scalp. At Sally's there are a few that don't require heat. There is an Ion brand that has conditioners in it and you could also get Quick Blue. If you are doing an all over blond and not using a cap or foil, I would definitely go with the Quick Blue or the Ion one. They won't burn your scalp. Also, I would use a 30 volume developer. Any higher will probably burn the scalp.

I'm located in LA. If anyone is in the area that wants my hair gal's info, let me know.

I definitely see all your perspective(s) that going to Supercuts OR doing it myself would be a huge mistake. Good point! Ridiculous little me.

I will try and find some other alternative.

Love, the High Maintenance Freak Out.

I COMPLETELY agree with OP... having been a blonde all my life, I know that it's alot more tricky to get it right than brunette hair. But OP, I would def stick with what works. maybe try someone else once, but don't sacrifice your HAIR, come on!

lol OP, nothing wrong with being high maintenance! I just wish your "specialist" was in SLC!

Next time your specialist is doing your hair, look at what brand she is using (Wella, etc.), then see if you can get a licensed professional to buy it for you.

Or, ask your stylist if she can recommend someone to you that won't charge quite as much. I'm sure if you explain that you LOVE her, but just can't swing it right now, she would understand. Does she have an apprentice?

I know a specialist in SLC that does blonde. She's having a baby this month and in a month or two is starting a small salon from her home. This is who I ALWAYS have do my hair. She's done blonde, but I always switch color and she seems to read my mind every time. Pretty sure she's the best!

just because they went to the same amount of school, doesn't mean they are equals. as with most professions you want the best at what someone does you are going to pay....not go to some cookie cutter chain store. stick with what you know! if you have perfect blonde, keep it!

I didn't read all the comments so someone may have already said this but I went to cosmetology school (esthetics, not hair) and the fact of the matter is, yes Supercuts does receive just as much training, but some people are just better at it. I know plenty of hair stylists that still sucked when they graduated. I'm a firm believer that when a stylist charges a lot it's because she can do so and people will still keep coming back. That says something!

I also know some stylists that were amazing from their very first day in school. It's called natural talent. If it were me I'd find out which school near you is the best, and ask for an instructor to recommend someone.
