I have been having a hard time with a very painful nipple. I'm about a week away from my period and I know that breasts and nipples can become sore but this is not sore. It's very, very painful. It's a throbbing pain and it's unbearable to touch. And it's only the one side. There's no lumps or discharge or anything. Just one very painful, hard nipple. I haven't been wearing tight bras or working out extensively. Has anyone else had this happen? What do you women think?
Sorry if this is gross but I am in serious pain and need some advice. Thanks!

The symptoms are a bit worrisome. Take ibuprofen for the symptoms and go see your medical provider. Symptoms like that could represent lots of things including infection, inflammation or even an early sign of intraductal breast cancer. Don't ignore it. Don't panic either. Just go get seen.
Best of luck.
My brother (yes, brother) had an infected nipple. It sounds like what you're talking about. He had to go to the doctor and get it lanced and drained. I wonder if they do that to women?
Anyway, call the doctor.
