A question for smokers

Can smokers smell the stench of smoking? Here's why I ask: I have an adult family member (50+ yrs old) that started smoking a few years ago, but she hides it from us. (Other members of our family smoke and they don't hide it). When we visit with her, she will make up an excuse to run an errand and then she comes back smelling of cigarettes. When she opened her purse the other day, the smell that came out about knocked me over. I wonder if she can't smell it and therefore doesn't realize that others can. Just curious.

I'd love to just let her know that I know she smokes, but I think it would be awkward for her since she has gone to great lengths to hide it and what would I really say?

Smokers can't smell themselves, or other smokers. I smoked for three years, and I never knew I smelled like a "smoker". I started smelling it on people about a year after I quit and it just hit me: "THAT'S what I smelled like???" I don't know why smokers think they can't hide their habit... But if I were you, I wouldn't say anything. If she hasn't told you, she probably has a good reason and it's her business, not yours. So leave her be.

Spelling error: I meant to say "I don't know why smokers think they CAN hide their habit"

To clarify, the only reason I want to let her know that we know she smokes is so that she doesn't have to hide it and leave her home when she needs to. We stay with her a couple of times a year and I feel bad that she doesn't feel comfortable enough around us to do her thing.

Maybe she's afraid that she'll be judged.
